Victim Services

The Victim Services Unit of the Madison County District Attorney's Office provides victims of violent crime with support as their cases are being processed through the judicial system. We are the voice for victims in the judicial system.  When a victim comes into the criminal justice system, it can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. The Victim Service Officers (VSOs) offer information, moral support, answers to questions and a place to relax before, during and after each phase of a case. A VSO is assigned to each victim or their survivor in the following type violent crimes: Felony Assaults (physical or sexual), Murder, Robberies, Intimidating a Witness, Burglary in the 1st degree, and Interference with  Custody. Services provided by our office for the victims of violent crime, or their survivors, include:
  • Arrangements for counseling
  • Assistance in applying for restitution from the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Fund
  • Keeping victims and families apprised of case events and court dates
  • Preparation of witnesses and victims for court appearance
  • Attending court hearings with victims and families
  • Monitoring Pardon and Parole hearings
Alabama Crime Victims Fund: As a victim of crime, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for some of your expenses if you meet the following requirements:
  • You have been injured as a result of criminal conduct.
  • You are the dependent of a deceased victim, if that victim died as a result of the crime.
  • You did not cause or contribute to the criminal conduct.
  • You file your application within one year of the incident.
  • The incident was reported to law enforcement within 72 hours.
  • You have fully cooperated with law enforcement officials.
  • Your economic loss has not been paid by other sources.
